The Yorkshire Wolds are too often overlooked by visitors and vacationers. Ask about exploring the countryside and those in the know about Yorkshire are almost certain to direct you to the Yorkshire Dales or the North York Moors. Both have undoubted appeal, but the much less famous Yorkshire Wolds is very beautiful and so easily reached from York that it would be a shame to miss. Half an hour's drive from the medieval city of York and you are in another world.
The Yorkshire Wolds run from the east coast at Filey to the Vale of York. It’s an area of softly sloping chalk hills and shady valleys. This is fertile farming country, pretty rather than dramatic, but its beauty helped to lure internationally renowned artist David Hockney back from California. He’s been quoted as saying, “I think we’ve found paradise here” – but he is a Yorkshireman.
Because we were heading from York to the Rambler’s Rest at Millington we decided to arrive in proper style – on foot. It’s a half hour bus ride to the small market town of Pocklington, then a pleasant three mile walk. Plan on wearing your walking boots, or at the very least stout shoes. Views from the Wolds Way footpath make it well worth the walk, but most guests do arrive by car or even bicycle, so do it your way.
