This huge annual festival, claiming to be the biggest of its kind in England, takes over most of Brighton for three weeks in May. Theatre, opera, dance, art, stand-up comedy, screenings and kids events fill indoor and outdoor venues all over the place.

In 2009, the 43rd year, the festival will include 26 premieres, seven of which are commissions for the Brighton Festival. Guest Artistic Director, Turner Prize winning sculptor and installation artist Anish Kapoor has brought a number of his highly acclaimed works to the festival and has created two new site specific works especially for Brighton. Parades, street performances and fireworks are free. And the Brighton Fringe Festival, running alongside, offers even more for adults, kids and night owls.
