According to festival stories, the V Festival's twinned venues came about in the 1990s when Jarvis Cocker, of Pulp, mentioned he'd like to play two different outdoor venues in two days.

The multi-stage festival takes place on a Saturday and Sunday, simultaneously in the Southeast - Chelmsford - and in the North Midlands - Staffordshire. The Saturday line ups of artists at each venue switches from the other venue on Sunday.

Acts tend to come from the cream of British pop musicians. In 2009 Oasis, Lily Allen, The Killers, The Human League, Razorlight, Peter Doherty, Fatboy Slim and Scottish pop musician Paolo Nuttini were among those lined up.
