Relax - they're not signs from above or the work of mischievous pranksters. Farmers all over the country - in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands - have had to diversify in recent years, creating imaginative and money spinning uses for their land. Corn mazes, or maize mazes as they are tongue twistingly known in the UK, have proven an enormously popular way to have an enjoyable family day out in the countryside.
More Than Just A Place To Get Lost
Most corn mazes around the UK have a variety of attractions and entertainments. In 2009, for example, The York Maze, the largest in Europe, had an 18 acre, 1000-foot astronaut, a tractor-ride maze, a crazy golf maze and a maze of illusions spread over a 45 acre site with more than six miles of pathways.Down south at Tulleys Farm in West Sussex, farmer Stuart Beare created a giant, 600-foot rooster with three and a half miles of paths. The twisting pathways have gates so that crafty Farmer Beare can change the routes through the maze to confound regulars.
