New Year's Resolutions for UK Travelers

Top Five Easy to Keep New Year's Resolutions

By , About.com Guide

Here are five New Year's Resolutions that most UK travelers will find easy to keep. You know the drill. It's New Year's Day and you're nursing a sore head and a sore throat from the night before. With the best of intentions you make a slew of resolutions and most of them don't even keep until the end of the day.
Try these instead - a handful of New Year's resolutions that, I promise, are much easier to keep.

1. Get More Exercise

You don't have to get up extra early to squeeze in a workout in the hotel gym when you're vacationing in the UK. There are many more ways to get a healthy workout that are a lot more fun.

2. Get Out More

After a day of sightseeing and a nice dinner, it's easy to settle in by the telly or your hotel's roaring fire and have an early night in preparation for tomorrow's early start. Hey You! Get moving. Look lively and make the most of the time you have because, as the Irish say, you're a long time dead.

There's plenty to do in the evening around the UK. Here are a few ideas:

Wherever you are in the UK, pick up the local listings guide - Time Out in London, The List in Scotland, NME for news of gigs all over the place - and sample the local music, theatre, concert and nightlife scenes.

3. Spend Less - On Everything

It looks like we're all going to tighten our belts this year. But just because you're on an austerity budget doesn't mean you can't take a UK vacation. Just watch where else you spend the rest of your pennies and the dollars will soon add up. Take a look at these money saving ideas:

4. Save the Planet - Go Green

Eco-friendly travel and sustainable tourism is not only smart and responsible - it can also be fun and save you money too. Try these on for size:
  • Take the train - Train travel in the UK is faster and cheaper than driving. It is also much more environmentally responsbile. If you buy a BritRail Pass before you arrive, you don't even have to worry about buying tickets in advance.
  • Stay in a Straw Cabin - Talk about low impact construction. The environmentally friendly straw bale cabin built by Home Grown Homes, in Yorkshire, is about as green as it is possible to be while still having a roof over your head.

5. Look After Number One

If you've kept all your other New Year's Resolutions, you must be feeling pretty virtuous. How about some "me" time now. Nothing wrong with a little therapeutic self-indulgence. Sink into a natural thermal bath or let an expert apply lovely treatments at a spa. These are nice:
  • Thermae Bath Spa - At the site of Bath's original Roman spa, the city of Bath has created a multi-million pound, luxury 20th century spa with pools, steam rooms and more. There is even a naturally heated, rooftop pool. Lovely.
  • Verbena Spa Things are certainly loosening up in crusty old Yorkshire if this small but perfectly formed spa in the pretty town of Helmsley is anything to go by. What better way to relax after a hike in the Dales?
