Waterside is the road that runs along the Avon on the Shakespeare Theatre side. There is more than enough to see and do along this to spend a pleasant afternoon. Start out with a visit to the Swan Gallery in the Swan Theatre - the original Shakespeare Memorial Theatre built in 1874. Until September the exhbition is Transforming Our Theatres, all about the 4-year redevelopment of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, just getting under way.

Stroll down to the Courtyard Theatre - the temporary home of the Royal Shakespeare Company until 2011- and join a backstage tour.

The tours are 45 minutes long and free, though they have to be booked in advance. Every tour is different because the areas visited will depend on rehearsal and performance schedules. Some tours might get to see a rehearsal in progress while others might only be able to go backstage. This is a great experience for any starstruck young people in your party.

After the tour, show your ticket in the Courtyard Café Bar for a 20% discount on a coffee and cake.
