The word pharmacy is creeping into use in the UK but people usually ask for a chemist when they are looking for medicines or health and beauty products. The person who dispenses prescription medicines is always called the chemist.

Boots and Superdrug (see insets in the photo above) are two popular brands of high street chemists. Of the two, you are more likely to find a dispensing chemist - who can fill a prescription or give you advice - at Boots. Only about a third of Superdrug stores have in-store chemists.

Both stores also sell small electrical goods, personal hygiene products, photo processing, paper goods, sweets and snacks. They don't sell cigarettes.

If you can't find a familiar, brand name chemist, look for a sign with a green cross -- like the one just visible on the left of the picture above. This is a European symbol that is beginning to catch on. Insider Tip: If you are visiting the UK from another country and use prescription medicines, bring enough for your trip. You won't be able to fill a foreign prescription at a UK chemist. You would have to make a private appointment with a doctor to get a new prescription that is valid in the UK.
