E.A. Hornel was one of an influential group of late 19th century Scottish impressionists known as "The Glasgow Boys" . When he returned to his home town of Kirkcudbright and bought Broughton House, a large, but simple townhouse, he brought with him the spoils of a successful art career, including art, ceramics, furniture and his collection of 25,000 books.

Today, the house and garden, owned and managed by the National Trust for Scotland, contains his collections, including a gallery of his paintings, and the accessories and furnishings of a successful Edwardian gentleman, as well as the lovely garden he designed.
