The Maid of the Loch on Loch Lomond - Britain's Last Great Paddle Steamer
The largest vessel ever built for UK inland waters

By Ferne Arfin, About.com

She was once the glory of Loch Lomond. The Maid of the Loch, built in 1953, was not only the biggest vessel ever built for Britain's inland waters, she was also the last.

The Maid of the Loch was retired in 1981 and, sadly, vandals nearly put an end to her. But now she is being restored by volunteers and she may one day even ply the waters of Loch Lomond, the UK's biggest fresh water body. In the meantime, you can visit her at her static dock in Balloch, on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond. There's a museum and café and you can charter The Maid of the Loch for weddings, parties and group events.
