Hull Marina and Humberside Docks

The Hull Marina and Historic Humberside Docks area makes a pleasant walk near the Holiday Inn Marina in Hull

The Bottom Line

You don't get many surprises with a Holiday Inn and this one, built in the 1980s is typically reliable, clean and comfortable. We didn't have time to use the gym, sauna or heated pool, but we enjoyed calm waterside views of the Hull Marina. Sadly, service seemed a bit slapdash.

Guide Review - UK Holiday Inn Review - Holiday Inn Hull Marina

The Holiday Inn Hull Marina is comfortingly familiar in a city whose hotels have, otherwise, not caught up with growing visitor interest. This small city in East Yorkshire that has, lately, been smartening up its act.

Attractions of Hull

The Deep, Hull Truck Theatre and Hull City Premiership football team draw visitors. History buffs come to explore the Parliamentary seat of William Wilberforce, father of the movement to abolish the slave trade. While Americans of Northern European descent can trace their ancestors' journey through the transmigration port of Hull - the stopover for more than two million of them heading to the Liverpool Docks and on to North America.

Holiday Inns in Hull

Hull's two UK Holiday Inns (there is also a new downtown Holiday Inn Express) are reliable standouts amid an otherwised mixed bag of B&Bs and hotels.

Rooms at the Holiday Inn Hull Marina are simply but comfortably furnished and, though the hotel dates from 1983, show remarkably few signs of wear and tear. I was particularly impressed with the large, immaculate bathtub, though shower fans may balk at the lack of a separate shower enclosure.

Marina Views

Rooms overlook Hull Marina and the city's historic Humberside docks. Before we left, we strolled around the docks and locks. A cool, mysterious fog hung over almost mirror still water and a foghorn moaned in the distance. Nearby, the Spurn Lightship, now a free visitor attraction, reminded us that ships once needed its help to navigate up Humber through similar fogs.

The Holiday Inn Hull Marina makes a pleasant overnight stop that could be improved with more attention to service. We arrived to find a bathroom without toilet paper. No one rang to order our evening taxi and later that night, unable to get room service to answer the phone, we had to call the front desk, repeatedly, to order a meal.
