Canterbury is rich in history and only about an hour, by train, from London. Its layout reflects the castle wall that once completely surrounded it. The wall follows the path of an earlier, Roman wall, evidence of which can still be seen.

Canterbury Castle is free to visit. An elevated walkway, inside the city wall, offers views of the castle and cathedral precinct.

Don't miss a visit to Canterbury Cathedral. Considered the "Mother Church" of the Anglican Communion, Canterbury Cathedral can date it's origins to St. Augustine, sent to convert the Britons more than 1400 years ago. The ruins of St. Augustine's Abbey, just outside the city walls, date from AD 597 and are part of Canterbury's World Heritage site.

The Cathedral is also where St. Thomas à Becket was martyred and where Chaucer's pilgrims were headed in The Canterbury Tales.
