When Le Tour de France 2007 left London for Canterbury, the day could not have been better. Skies cleared and the sun, which had been absent for weeks, made a grand show of itself. The cyclists crossed Kent, often called the Garden of England, in gorgeous mild weather, passing castles, oast houses and even a narrow gauge steam railway.
