Currently the trendiest area for the well-heeled and the unofficial center of gay Brighton, Kemp Town's tall, elegant houses range from the slightly rundown to the bright and pristine - all packed, side-by-side in terraces of cream-colored houses on the few blocks closest to the seafront.
Built as a genteel guesthouse in the 1850s, the Kemp Townhouse is of the pristine variety, impeccably restored in just four months by current owners Claas Wulff and Russell Braterman. It joins a small, select group of newish Brighton boutique hotels that make perfect romantic hideaways.
On a recent visit we sampled an elegant breakfast and looked in on several of the hotel's nine, eclectic rooms. The verdict? This is indulgence of a pretty high standard at surprisingly modest prices.
