A Special Treat for Dog Lovers

Sheep Dog Trialing is one of those English rural pursuits that only sheep farmers understand. They and real anoraks who were rivetted to their TVs in the 1980s watching "One Man and His Dog". If you enjoyed the film "Babe" with its "sheep pig", you get the idea. For three days, from August 21, 30,000 spectators are expected to show up at the Castle Hill Estate in Barnstaple, North Devon, to watch 150 sheepdogs and their handlers, from throughout the UK, compete for titles in the National Sheep Dog Trials. Alongside the dog trials, they're planning an activity arena with hourly displays and entertainment, arts and crafts stalls and a food marquee stocked with local produce. The local Country Life Brewery has even brewed a special beer just for the trials.

If you're a fan - or think you might become one - Marsdens Cottage Holidays, who manage hundreds of vacation rental cottages near the Castle Hill Estate, have a good deal for you. Book a break in one of their cottages during the week of the event and they'll throw in tickets to the National Sheep Dog Trials for the whole family, worth up to £60. That's for access to the dog trials, Castle Hill's Grade I listed house and grounds and all the activities and events.

To book telephone Marsdens Cottage Holidays on +44 (0)1271 813 777 for a copy of their brochure or visit their website to check properties and availability.

Tickets must be booked in advance on the Heathrow Express website. The saving, per child, is £8.20 Express Class(£16.00 round trip), or £13 First Class (£25 round trip).

Come Home to Scotland and Save

The new Homecoming Pass is one of the better ideas to have come out of this year's Homecoming Scotland campaign. Historic Scotland, The National Trust for Scotland and The Historic Houses Association have teamed up to offer free access to more than 130 castles, gardens and historic sites with one discount pass. Prices start as low as £35 for an adult and £85 for a family of four. The pass is good for seven days and the more you use it, the more you can save. Liverpool Adventures for the Whole Family

Liverpool, birthplace of the Beatles, has more than enough museums, shopping and Merseyside adventures to keep the whole family busy for several days. Take advantage of some very good family packages at the Crowne Plaza Liverpool City Centre.

For £132.50 per room, per night (min. 2 nights stay), the hotel's Beatles Bonanza includes family room accommodation for two adults and two children under 16, full English breakfasts and tickets for one visit for a family of four to The Beatles Story. Dorm Rooms Ain't What They Used to Be

Some have ensuite bathrooms, free broadband internet, daily cleaning services and terrific English breakfasts in fabulous historic halls. And more and more of them are being made available for visitors during University vacations. If you are heading for the UK between mid June and September, a B&B room at Oxford, Cambridge or any one of dozens of prestigious UK universities could be yours for an average of about $45 a night. How about a room in a 12th century castle at Durham University? Or a night in Bill Clinton's old room at Oxford. Learn how to find and book a college dorm room at a UK University, a really different kind of budget accommodations.

The Great British Heritage Pass - Save a Bundle on Admission to Nearly Everything!

The Great British Heritage Pass, offered by VisitBritain to visitors from outside the United Kingdom, is one of the best deal's I've seen in a long time. For one flat fee -covering 4, 7, 15 or 30 days - pass holders get full admission to almost 600 different sites; family passes, for two adults and three kids under 16 are available too. Good value? Well VisitBritain compiled the cost of single adult tickets to the top 15 UK sites. The price came to £141.60. The cost of a Great British Heritage Pass for 15 days was £52 - that's a savings of £89. Even if you spread those 15 site visits over a month long pass (£70), you'd still save £71.60. That sounds like a great deal to me.
