Derby Real Ale Break is a Real Bargain

Derby claims to be the real ale capital of the Midlands and, with over 120 real ale pubs, three breweries within the city and two annual Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) festivals, its hard to argue. Among the highlights in this compact city - where you can safely imbibe without having to drive, are Ye Olde Dolphin, dating back to 1530, and The Brunswick Inn - England's first purpose built railway-workers' pub. Real Ale Breaks in Derby, start at only £62 per person. Go in July, during the CAMRA Beer Festival (July 9-13), and all this is included in the price of the break:
  • Free admission to the CAMRA Beer Festival at the Assembly Rooms with a souvenir beer tankard and a free half pint of real ale per person. There's live music and lots of entertainment.
  • A do-it-yourself pub crawl along one of two Derby Real Ale Trails
  • A Microbrewery visit to the Derby Brewing Company, with a free pint of real ale
  • A Microbrewery visit to the Brunswick Inn, a restored, Victorian railwayman's pub

The Queen's Room Has Been Freshened Up For You

The Queen Elizabeth Suite, once used - so they say - by the Virgin Queen herself, is one of five bedrooms recently refurbished as part of a £1 million facelift at the historic Spread Eagle Hotel and Spa in Midhurst, West Sussex. The 15th century (circa 1430), luxury inn has been made more eco friendly as well - and there's a new hot tub in the spa. To celebrate completion of the works, the hotel is offering dinner, bed and breakfast for £82.50 (for two sharing), until the end of May. Since dinner, with wine, averages £40 to £50 per person, the savings on a standard double could be as much as £100.

The hotel is well situated for a walk on the South Downs, or visits to Goodwood and Chichester. To book, telephone +44(0) 01730 816911 or email spreadeagle@hshotels.co.uk

The Great British Heritage Pass - Save a Bundle on Admission to Nearly Everything!

The Great British Heritage Pass, offered by VisitBritain to visitors from outside the United Kingdom, is one of the best deal's I've seen in a long time. For one flat fee -covering 4, 7, 15 or 30 days - pass holders get full admission to almost 600 different sites; family passes, for two adults and three kids under 16 are available too. Good value? Well VisitBritain compiled the cost of single adult tickets to the top 15 UK sites. The price came to £141.60. The cost of a Great British Heritage Pass for 15 days was £52 - that's a savings of £89. Even if you spread those 15 site visits over a month long pass (£70), you'd still save £71.60. That sounds like a great deal to me.
