Book Holiday Season Rail Travel Now

10/29/2009

The UK's train companies are booking advance reservations for the holidays, through Jan 6, 2010. Now is the time to nab the cheapest advance fare tickets for Christmas and New Years train travel. First Great Western, for example, will take you from London to Paignton in Devon for only £25 off peak, round trip. National Express East Coast offers London to Newcastle at £81.50 round trip. Most of the UK train services are offering similar, bargain prices for advance tickets, usually booked online. These reduced price advance fares (sold as two, one-way tickets rather than "returns") are offered in limited numbers and only for a short time. Check National Rail Enquiries to find the best advance fares now available for your holiday rail travel.

Bonkers for Bangers in Leeds

November, with all its bonfires and Guy Fawkes fireworks parties, is a great month for bangers - juicy British sausages. To celebrate, 42 the Calls, the Leeds hotel noted for serving 12 different varieties of sausages at breakfast, is offering a special Bonkers About Bangers rate for the whole month. Rooms normally priced at £180 per night - including a full Yorkshire breakfast for two - are going for only £110 per night per room, throughout November. To book, telephone +44 (0)113 2440099 or visit their website.

And, if you have a really big appetite, check out how you can win a free night's B&B stay between Nov. 2 and 8.

Midweek Breaks are How Cheap???

Macdonald hotels are offering midweek autumn rates that are just too good to miss. Until November 22, for £39 per person, per night, the group is offering bed and breakfast at any of more than 40 hotels and resorts in England and Scotland. Plus guests receive a £15 voucher every night they stay, redeemable in the hotels' restaurants and spas. For another £20 ppn, they'll throw in a bang up dinner too. To find out more and to book a bargain break at a Macdonald Hotel, visit their Autumn Midweek Breaks website.

T.G.I.F.

Give yourself a Friday night treat at the Chester Grosvenor Hotel where luxury is on the menu along with a gourmet meal. The hotel's "Luxury for Less" Friday night package starts at £100 per person (based on two people sharing) and includes bed and breakfast as well as a three course meal in the hotel's Michelin-starred restaurant, Simon Radley at the Chester Grosvenor. Watching your weight before the festive season? No problem, you can choose a 60 minute, luxury spa treatment instead of dinner.

Chester is a great place to get in some holiday shopping. Its "Rows", medieval shopping streets on two levels, are lined with famous brands as well as stylish, local independent shops. To book this package, ring +44 (0)1244 324024, or check availability online.

Spotlight on Lincoln

Lincoln is one of England's prettiest small cities. The independent shops of the wonderfully named (and terrifyingly steep) Steep Hill and Bailgate are cool for browsing and, come Christmas, the city's Christmas market in the Cathedral precincts is the oldest and one of the most atmospheric in the country. Speaking of Cathedrals, Lincoln Cathedral was started in 1068, two years after William the Conqueror arrived, making it nearly 950 years old.

Right in the shadow of Lincoln Cathedral and with great views of Lincoln's ancient castle as well, The White Hart Hotel describes itself as an intimate boutique hotel. Plan an autumn escape on a Sunday night until November 30 - or time your UK tour to arrive there on a Sunday night - and you can take advantage of their "Spice Up Your Sundays" deal. Two people can stay for dinner, bed and breakfast, all in for just £99. There are a few conditions - it's a two course dinner of starter and main or main and dessert, and you have to dine before 7 p.m. Dine later and there is a £10 surcharge per person. It's still a pretty good deal and the hotel is in a great location. To book, visit the hotel's special offers page online or telephone +44 (0)1522 563293 and ask for offer number 4.

2-for-1 Away Days to Kent

Londoners planning "staycations" and visitors looking for affordable day trips will benefit from a host of 2-for-1 offers arranged by Visit Kent, the official Kent tourism organization, and Southeastern, the county's rail provider. A valid train ticket and a Visit Kent voucher gets you 2-for-1 tickets to attractions and activities as well as 2 night stays for the price of 1 at participating hotels and inns. Voucher books are available at all large stations served by Southeastern. Or check the offers and print out a voucher from the special offer website.

The Cheapest Train Travel In Britain

Megatrain offers cheap train fares - as low as £1 from London to destinations in the South West, the East Midlands and South Yorkshire. Find out how Megatrain can save you a bundle.

The Great British Heritage Pass - Save a Bundle on Admission to Nearly Everything!

The Great British Heritage Pass, offered by VisitBritain to visitors from outside the United Kingdom, is one of the best deal's I've seen in a long time. For one flat fee -covering 4, 7, 15 or 30 days - pass holders get full admission to almost 600 different sites; family passes, for two adults and three kids under 16 are available too. Good value? Well VisitBritain compiled the cost of single adult tickets to the top 15 UK sites. The price came to £141.60. The cost of a Great British Heritage Pass for 15 days was £52 - that's a savings of £89. Even if you spread those 15 site visits over a month long pass (£70), you'd still save £71.60. That sounds like a great deal to me.
