Though less than an hour from London, there is nothing suburban about this English country house hotel, with spa and with indoor pool. It has been home to exiled French royals and heads of state in the past. Among its illustrious owners were the ancestors of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee.
The house is set in acres of spectacular parkland with picturesque cows artfully munching the grass here and there and a gazebo cum folly adding to the view. There's a yellow and cream Great Hall, with antique furnishings and Coromandel screens as well as a beautiful painted ceiling. The oak panelled bar is manly and English, while the morning room, under its frivolous Venetian glass chandelier, is delicate and feminine. The guestrooms themselves are spacious. Furnishings are in the spirit of the public rooms without making you feel like you are staying in a museum. Many have four-poster beds and most have jacuzzis.
