Wildlife Photographers and Anglers Take Note

Take a short or midweek break at The Tranquil Otter, self-catering cottages in North Cumbria, and enjoy four nights for the price of three until the end of the year. The 5-star lake-front, cottages are arranged around a private lake in the Solway Firth and Plain area of North Cumbria. Most are equipped with row boats and hot tubs or saunas. The site, not far from Hadrian's Wall and historic Carlisle, is totally accessible. There is even an electrically powered wheely boat for the lake and an electric mobility scooter for the lakeside path.

Guests who don't fancy staying an extra night free can choose one free beauty treatment - massage, facial, reflexology - and 20% off a second one instead. For details of this offer, check out the Tranquil Otter website, then visit Enjoy England to print out an offer voucher.

A Good Bet for a Bed in Scotland

The Tontine, a family run hotel in the lovely Scottish Borders town of Peebles, is well known locally for its simple, good value cuisine and comfortable accommodations. Our spies in the north have recently reported back that the service there is also more than praiseworthy. Built in 1808, the hotel overlooks the River Tweed, 23 miles south of Edinburgh.

Bed and breakfast at £55 per person is a good deal, but the bed, breakfast and dinner rate - with access to the hotel's full a la carte menu - is an especially good deal. Advertised at £77.50 per person on the hotel's website, we've heard about deals for considerably less. Check it out by visiting the Tontine website, or by telephoning +44 (0)1721 720 892.

Wondering about that "Bet"? The clue is in the hotel's name. A Tontine was a kind of bet on life in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The prize, often a contested inheritance, went to the last member of the tontine left alive. We guess that The Tontine in Peebles was the prize in one such macabre bet.

The Right Price for a Kentish Country Break

Thinking about a walking or cycling vacation in the Kent countryside? We like the look of Southernwood House, a 4-star, walker and cyclist friendly B&B in the medieval village of Hever. It's close to Hever Castle - childhood home of Anne Boleyn, Penshurst Place, Chiddingston and Chartwell plus a host of other National Trust properties in the area (watch for Ightham Moat House, coming soon!). B&B for 2 with ensuite bathroom, tea and coffee making facilities, costs £60-70 per room per night. It was a Georgian rectory and looks very atmospheric (wonder if there's a ghost). To book, telephone the owner on +44 (0)1342 850880, or email info@southernwoodhouse.org.uk.

Stay in an Eco-Friendly Barn

For only £7 per person per night (year round), Lakeland Camping Barns will put you up in a former stable, corn store or cattle byre, in the Lake District, converted to self-catering accommodation for 8 to 18 people. The barns are owned and run by local farmers. They are basic but provide watertight sleeping, cooking/eating and washing areas in historic buildings and stunning areas. The newest in the network, Wythmoor, is an eco-friendly conversion of a 19th century barn, northeast of Kendal, with solar panels for hot water, underfloor heating from a ground source heat pump and electricity from a wind turbine. For more details - including a virtual tour of all the barns - and to book, visit their website or telephone +44 (0)1946 758 198.

And now for something completely different

Under the Thatch has 23 unusual and affordable self-catering properties in Wales - ranging from rustic log cabins and 17th century farmhouses to converted railway cars, restored Romany caravans and even a circus showman's wagon. Many of the traditional cottages are thatch-roofed and some, with their white-washed and pink-washed walls, look like they were last inhabited by hobbits or elves. Their packages start as low as £25 per night and they regularly post very good last minute deals and special offers on their website. These remote and original accommodations are good value as romantic getaways or bases.
