Jamie Oliver's favorite scallop man dives for scallops and then cooks up scallop lunches for the punters on Saturdays at Borough Market, London When the Romans marched up to the Thames on the way to their conquest of Britain -- founding Londinium along the way, some accounts indicate they came upon a market fair at Southwark --right about where the current Borough Market stands.Later, in the Middle Ages, the market here spread all the way across London Bridge. The fortunes of the market rose and fell but there have always been a few farmers trading wholesale in this area. Floral Hall, the cast iron structure that covers part of the open air market is a 19th century development. Its restoration in the 21st century has led to a rebirth of Borough Market. Now, in our era of celebrity cooks and cookbooks where food is almost the new porn, the very high quality goods for sale make this one of London's top attractions.
