Borough Market - A Cheap and Delicious Day Out in London

Try something typically London that is also untypically virtually free

By , About.com Guide

Borough Market, one of London's best Friday and Saturday foodie markets, is a great place to graze on gourmet goodies while taking pictures and people watching. There are plenty of interesting packaged foods and bottled sauces to take home. But the real pleasure of Borough is just walking around, taking in the market scene.

Borough market is just a few hundred yards from the Tate Modern, London's outrageous (and always free) contemporary art gallery in a former power station by the Thames. Combine a morning or afternoon at the Tate with a picnic lunch gathered from the stalls at Borough Market and a riverside stroll and you could easily spend a whole day in London for about £20.

  • Getting There: Tube to London Bridge Station, cross the bridge and follow the crowds or Borough Station and head for the River.
  • Hours: Fridays noon to 6 p.m., Saturday's 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
