By , About.com Guide

For the first time in more than 1,600 years, torches flickered along the length of Hadrian’s Wall in March 2010. The wall, from Segedunum Roman Fort, east of Newcastle, through Carlisle to the west coast of Cumbria, once marked the northern edge of the Roman Empire.

In a unique event, sponsored by a clutch of regional tourism and arts organizations, the Roman Wall was illuminated by torches, from coast to coast. In under an hour the light traveled 84 miles across the country, in torches lit by more than 1000 volunteers.

Major "Illuminating Hadrian’s Wall" events took place at both ends. In the historic city of Carlisle, once an important fortress on the Roman border, they "Welcomed the Light, with a torchlight parade culminating in a fiery spectacle.
