On November 5, and a few days before and after that date, the UK is ablaze with bonfires and fireworks displays to celebrate Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes, marking the foiling, more than 400 years ago, of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up Parliament.

Guy Fawkes, the most famous conspirator - though probably not the leader of the plot as many people believe - is customarily burned in effigy on a huge public bonfire. Private bonfires and fireworks parties are also held.

In York, however, there are a few places where the festivities might be a bit more subdued and where the burning of a "Guy", as the effigy is called, are unlikely. In York on Bonfire Night, thoughts turn to one of the city's most infamous sons.

Guy Fawkes, you see, was a Yorkshire lad.
