Last Minute Accommodations During the Edinburgh Festivals

Left it too late for a room during the Edinburgh Festivals? Maybe not

By , About.com Guide

Making spur of the moment plans to attend one of the August Edinburgh Festivals - Fringe, International, Jazz&Blues, Book Festival - might seem pretty crazy. During August, the city doubles in size as thousands pour in for the overlapping festivals and events that flow into each other all month long.

Finding a last minute room isn't impossible though - especially if you are willing to be open minded about the kind of digs you stay in. Check out these ideas:

  • Phone a friend Use any connections you have to connect with someone who lives in Edinburgh or who might have digs they are willing to share for the Festivals. During festival month, many private sitting rooms get covered with sleeping bags and many a suburban backyard becomes a campsite. It never hurts to ask.
  • Look for online message boards These change every year but there is usually one the Fringe Festival website. People post available rooms and beds on the Festival forums. You can post your dates and requirements as well.
  • The Main Tourist Office, on 3 Princes Street, near Waverley Station, usually has a list of available rooms and beds. Arrive early in the day for the best choice.
  • Try VisitScotland's National Accommodation and Booking Line - +44(0)845 225 5121. They have a good reputation for finding last minute, short stay, accommodations.
  • Stay in Glasgow Not as far fetched as you might think. Glasgow is less than an hour from Edinburgh by train and the rail fare is only about £9.
  • Tweet Twitter was just made for connecting during big events like the Edinburgh Festivals. Pop in what you're looking for - #edfest rooms, for example, and see what comes up.
