During rationing, a wooden wheel replaced the cheese rolling down the hill - but a small piece of cheese was always placed in the center of it, to keep up the tradition. In those days, the prize was a 50 pence piece.

Today, besides bumps and bruises, the winner takes home a handmade Double Gloucester cheese made by Mrs. Diana Smart of Churcham. Mrs. Smart is the only person in Gloucestershire still making Double Gloucester cheeses by hand, using traditional methods.

There have been several multiple race winners. Dionne Carter, of Auckland, New Zealand, pictured here, has taken home the cheese for the women's race three years running.
