The South Downs Way takes off from Winchester, a Cathedral city also known as the Saxon capital of England. In its Great Hall, built by Alfred, a round table takes pride of place. It dates from the 14th century and isn't really King Arthur's but people like to imagine that it is That round table.

The extensive ruins of Wolvesy Castle, next to Winchester Cathedral, indicate the one time importance and wealth of the bishops of Winchester. The last known great occasion in this 12th century Norman keep turned bishop's palace was the marriage of Queen Mary to King Philip of Spain in 1554.

Literary fans will enjoy visiting Jane Austen's house and history buffs can visit Iron Age and Roman forts.

If you stay here try...

  • Hotel du Vin-Winchester, a cosy, 24-room, moderate priced boutique hotel. The hotel occupies an important Georgian building dating from 1715.
  • Lainston House is a restored William & Mary red brick manor house turned into a luxury hotel, set in 63 acres of rolling South Downs countryside. Individually decorated beds feature 4-posters and other luxury features.
