Georgian elegance and contemporary style close to Ludlow
The first impression of Fishmore Hall, near Ludlow in Shropshire, is of an elegant country home. It was originally a dower house - built for a landowners widow. Today's owner, Laura Penman, has created a contemporary hotel which respects its origins. It readiates a quiet, confident style which is thoroughly modern, but with a sense of grace. Colors are muted: creams, browns and taupes lifted by flashes of aqua or red. Lines are clean and simple but not stark; even the corridors are decorated withfresh flowers. Friendly staff who clearly enjoy looking after their guests keep the mood calm and relaxed.
There are four room grades at this country house hotel in Shropshire, including superior rooms with double-ended baths. No.7, the best room in the house, is also open plan. So yes, you can see the bath from the bed and no, there isn't a door on the toilet.
But it's an ideal setting for breakfast in bed. We watched through the huge Georgian window as Clee Hill emerged from the morning mist.
A country house hotel of this standard obviously implies choice of cooked and other breakfasts. Fishmore Hall raises the bar. The selection of cereals, seeds and berries really caught my eye.
Room No.1 on the ground floor also deserves mention. Disabled-friendly, it has gently ramped access and a double-width shower with marble seat. There's flat access to the dining room and from there to the bar and comfortable lounge.
