Edward I of England, the king known as Longshanks, was the bane of Braveheart William Wallace, in Scotland. He also spent a lot of time trying to subdue the rebellious Welsh. He planted many castles in Wales during his 13th century reign.

This splendid ruin probably started its life as a Roman fortress and was also the castle of a Welsh prince before Edward grabbed it and made it one of his Welsh castles. The Welsh hero, Owen Glendower, grabbed it back near the end of the 14th century.

This Welsh Castle that you can visit looks particularly fearsome, sitting as it does on the top of a nearly vertical ridge in the Brecon Beacons, North of Swansea. Just getting to it, through a passageway cut into the cliff, is pretty hair raising.
