Edward I, known as Longshanks, may have been the "Hammer of the Scots", but judging from the number of castles he built in Wales, he must have been the Hammer of the Welsh too.

Beaumaris Castle was started in 1295 and left unfinished. It was the last and largest of Longshanks' Castles of Wales. Even in its unfinished state, this castle in Wales is an engineering marvel.

Any more engineering marvels?

Well yes, actually. When you cross the Menai Straits, to get from the North Wales Coast to Anglesey, you use the Menai Suspension Bridge. Designed by Thomas Telford and completed in 1826, it is considered to be the first real suspension bridge in the world.

Essentials for the Castle

  • Hours: Open from 9:30a.m. to 5p.m. Spring and Fall, and to 6p.m. in Summer. The Beaumaris opens later and closes earlier in Winter.
  • Admission: £3.50
  • More information: Beaumaris Website
