The Bottom Line:
How Green Was My Valley
Located in the Brecon Beacons National Park, it sits on a high riverbank above the Usk. The river is well known for its trout and salmon fishing and, luckily, in an area where fishing rights are often private and expensive, the Llanwenarth can arrange day passes. The new owners, Richard Wallace and Chef/patron John West, can also advise on other outdoor activities -- walking, climbing, riding, golf, canoeing and hang gliding.
The hotel itself is a neat, whitewashed, 16th century building that was probably a pub. It's decorated with window boxes that overflow with blooms three seasons a year. The 17, individually decorated rooms have scenic views of the Usk Valley and the mountains beyond. Most have private balconies with tables and chairs as well.
The restaurant serves lunch and dinner in an all glass conservatory. At breakfast, which is included, it fills with dappled sunlight.
