The Menzies Welcombe Hotel,Spa & Golf Club is a luxury country house surrounded by a stunning, 18-hole golf course. It's about mile outside Stratford-upon-Avon, in the hamlet of Welcombe.

There are 78 rooms and suites, a spa with indoor and outdoor pools, thermal rooms, gym and aerobics studio. The hotel's public areas include an impressive oak panelled bar, restaurant and lounge. There are also tennis courts and facilities for outdoor sports.

A series of celebrated owners

A Jacobean-revival house, built in the late 19th century, Welcombe Manor once belonged to George Otto Trevelyan, father of historian George Macauley Trevelyan, and a noted politician and writer of his day. It passed through several owners, including Sir Archibald Flower, founder of Flowers Brewery, whose donation financed the original Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, now the Royal Shakespeare Company, in Stratford-upon-Avon.

And that's not the only Shakespeare connection. The playwright invested in some of the land connected to the house and it belonged to his family to the last of his direct descendents who died in 1670.
