Many - though not all - of the animals at Longleat are now classified as endangered, or rare in the wild. The park emphasizes creating a rich natural environment for all its animals in the hope that they will breed, increase their captive populations and help to advance understanding of their behaviours and needs in the wild. The long term aim is to someday release some endangered species back into the wild if that is possible.
This focus on the welfare of its animals is probably what has resulted in Longleat's successful animal breeding programs. And, in the spring, when the Safari Park opens to visitors, there are almost always newborns and baby animals like these, ready to make their public debuts.
