I always recommend traveling by train for visitors who want to get from point to point in Britain quickly and environmentally. But in my heart of hearts, I do love to drive. And if you are touring there really is no better way to explore the little backroads and byways, then behind the wheel of a car.
In the UK, autumn is the best time of year for this kind of travel. The kids have gone back to school and there are fewer vacationers on the back roads. The skies are likely to be either clear or dramatically clouded - either way gorgeous. And the turning heather and foliage gives everything a warm glow.
With that in mind, I'm recommending seven of my favorite scenic drives. Why not a top ten list? I didn't want to borrow other people's experiences which, I'm afraid is the truth behind some top ten lists. I've driven all these routes and I'll add more to this list as I drive and photograph more of them.
