Have a big appetite for sausages? A big enough appetite and you might just win a free luxury hotel break. To celebrate British Sausage Week, November 2-8, Leeds quirky but classy hostelry 42 the Calls, has laid down a challenge to all gourmands. The prize, a chance to win a free night's bed and breakfast stay.
The hotel is famous for serving 12 different varieties of gourmet sausages. Eat all 12 at one sitting and win a free night's stay and a big Yorkshire breakfast the next day (with more sausages of course).
Since opening in 1991, the hotel claims to have served up more than 325,000 sausages. To get your competitive juices flowing, they've sent along the names of all 12 varieties: pork & chive, venison, cumberland, plain pork, vegetarian, pure beef, lamb and rosemary, pork and black pudding, bratwurst, merguez, chicken & tarragon and pork with garlic and tomato.
By the way, if you've ever wondered why the Brits call sausages "bangers", here's the low down. During WWII and the period of austerity and rationing after, ingredients were scarce. Sausages had a high water content that turned to steam and caused them to explode when cooked.
